Individual Research contributions for Group Project (S10)

28 feb 2025 I looked into different technologies used in civil engineering to see which ones had room for improvement. After comparing their features and functions of various technologies, my team and I decided select the Microsoft Hololens 2. I suggested the Microsoft HoloLens 2 because of its potential in AR for construction. To understand the product better, I read research papers, technical documents, and user feedback. I focused on display issues like flickering lines, interlacing, and aliasing, as these could affect usability. I also used AI tools like ChatGPT to summarize research papers, allowing me to focus on the key points of the product. I took detailed notes on the strengths and weaknesses of the HoloLens 2, which helped shape our discussions on the problem we wanted to address. During team discussions, I played a key role in refining our problem statement, making sure our research had a clear direction. I also helped organize our Ideal, Gap, and Goal framework. To prepare...

Autodesk Revit is a Building Information Modelling (BIM) software which is widely used in construction and engineering. It is mainly used for designing, visualizing, and managing building projects. Revit enables users to create detailed 3D models that include both geometric and non-geometric data. This makes it easier for different disciplines to collaborate and coordinate effectively (Autodesk Inc., 2021). Combining different data types into a single model facilitates project management and helps teams work together efficiently during the design and construction phase. According to Eastman et al. (2018), Revit's parametric modelling enables seamless modifications to the 3D models without affecting other design elements. This helps reduce errors and inconsistencies within the design itself. Additionally, the software automatically creates 2D drawings, schedules, and reports, easing the documentation process and improving accuracy. Revit also supports terrain analysis, structural ...

Summary & Reader Reponse - Draft #3

Summary Autodesk Revit is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) software widely used in architecture, engineering, and construction for designing, visualizing, and managing building projects. It allows users to create 3D models that include both geometric and non-geometric data, making it easier for different disciplines to work together (Autodesk Inc., 2021). According to Eastman et al. (2018), Revit's parametric modeling enables seamless modifications while maintaining design relationships, hence, reducing errors. The software automates the creation of 2D drawings, schedules, and reports, streamlining documentation. Revit also supports terrain analysis, structural design, and construction sequencing, enhancing planning precision. As highlighted by BIM Corner (2023), Revit’s ability to integrate multiple design components into a single model enhances visualization and improves project planning. Collaboration tools such as Autodesk BIM 360 enable cloud-based worksharin...

Summary + Thesis + Supports #2 - Autodesk Revit

Thesis: Although some may argue that Autodesk Revit's steep learning curve and high cost make it inaccessible for smaller firms, its extensive features, such as parametric modeling and collaboration tools, ultimately make it an indispensable tool for enhancing efficiency, reducing errors, and ensuring sustainability in modern infrastructure projects. Support #1: Autodesk Revit’s parametric modelling improves project efficiency through automation during the design process. When a modification is made to one part of the model, all related components are automatically updated, thus reducing frequency of manual adjustments (Eastman et al., 2018). This ensures design consistency and saves time, especially in large-scale projects, where changes are frequent. The parametric system streamlines workflows, minimizes human error, and boosts productivity by automating repetitive tasks. Support #2: Revit’s collaboration tools , such as Autodesk BIM 360, improve coordination among project stake...
